James F. Hughes, 70, Altoona, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, son of the late James C. and Betty L. (Haiges) Hughes. On December 12, 1997 he married Elizabeth Caporuscio.
He is survived by his loving wife; three daughters: Stephanie A. (Bryan) Coho, Sabrina L. Mielnik, and Stacey Jo Hughes (Tyrone); three sons: Constant J. (Trisha) Evanoski IV, Adam C. (Alisa) Evanoski, and Eric B. (Mariah) Evanoski; sisters: Bettie V. Brennan, Sandra B. Feathers, and Jeannie L. (Gary) Jones; a brother, William J. (Anna Maria) Hughes; 14 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a nephew, Donald “Dutch” Brennan; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Caporuscio; and two beloved dogs, Rigby and Riley.
James graduated from Penn State with an Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for F. L. Smithe for 41 years. He also enjoyed teaching figure skating for over 30 years. He was a dedicated coach and his students meant the world to him.
James enjoyed autocross, sports, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a huge fan of Marvel comics and superheroes, and an overall family man to his wife, children and grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm Monday, March 4, 2019 at the Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10am Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the Axe and Santella Family Chapel, 1534-4th St. Altoona. Committal will be at Calvary Mausoleum.
