Charles R. McDowell Sr., 91, Altoona, passed away Sunday at his home, after an illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Wade R. McDowell and Ethel McDowell-DeRenzo. He later married Betty A. Pennington.
Surviving are his loving wife of 68 years; three daughters: Marsha (Gary) Johnson, Linda (William) Marlowe and Tracy Novack; three grandsons: Jason (Sasha) Potter, James Novack (fiance, Aliyah) and Tyler Novack; several nieces and nephews; and step-grandchildren and step- great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons: Charles R. McDowell Jr. and Terry L. McDowell; a sister, Grace Vaughn; and a nephew, James Vaughn.
Charles worked for Boyer Bros. for 42 years and served on the USS Valley Forge in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church, formerly the 58th St. United Methodist Church.
Charles enjoyed woodworking, restoration, remodeling, bowling, pool, playing cards, and watching football and tennis on T.V.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, at the Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home, 1520 Fourth St., Altoona. A funeral service will be held following the viewing at 4 p.m. at the funeral home, the Rev. Rebecca L. Holland officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
