Nancy Stoner Obituary

Nancy Ann (Lowther) Stoner, 84, of Altoona passed peacefully on December 22, 2024, in Harrisburg, NC, with family at her side, after an extended illness.

Born in Altoona to Albert and Helen (Bosley) Lowther, she was a 1958 graduate of Altoona High School. While employed at Sylvania Electric, she met a coworker, William Stoner, whom she married in 1968.  Together, they raised three children.  Nancy returned to school in her 40s to fulfill her childhood dream of being a nurse. She was a graduate of the Altoona Area Vo-Tech School LPN program and served as advisor to that program for many years.  Soon after graduation, she was employed as a charge nurse by Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries at the Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, where she worked until her retirement, taking great pride in providing high quality, compassionate care to the elderly.

Nancy loved to sing from a young age. She was active in the Sweet Adelines for seven years and acted as president for three. She instilled in her children a lifelong love of music. Other interests included reading (especially Stephen King), crocheting, and caring for her beloved dogs.  She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Altoona.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mabel Katherine and Helen Sue.  She is survived by William, her husband of 56 years; son, Albert (Charity) Stoner of Harrisburg, NC; daughter, Susan Stoner of Seattle, WA; daughter, Sherri (Paul) McClellan of Tucson, AZ; niece, Helen (Randy) Strong of Royal Oak, MI; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A brief service will be held at the Blair Memorial Park Chapel on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 2:00 pm. Arrangements are by Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Nancy to the Central PA Humane Society or Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Care Cabarrus of Kannapolis, NC.
