Robert T. Newkirk Jr.

Robert T. Newkirk Jr., 74, Altoona, passed away peacefully at UPMC Altoona surrounded by his family on Sunday. He was born in Hempstead, NY. Son of the late Robert Sr. and Mildred (Kunch) Newkirk. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy (Yohn) Newkirk of 45 years.

He is survived by his children: a daughter, Tracy (Bryan) Travis and Robert (Mandy) Newkirk II, both of Altoona; four grandsons: Robbie, Thomas, Josh, and Kyle; two sisters: Doris Mitchell, of Altoona and Ruth Newkirk, of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by 6 siblings.

Bob was a 1965 graduate of Uniondale High School in Long Island, NY. He served for several years in the US Army and Reserves. He retired from Conrail/Norfolk Southern after 30 years.

He loved spending time with family, especially when he hosted picnics, and hunting and fishing with his son and grandsons. He was a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society and Concordia, where he enjoyed bowling and softball.

Friends will be received from 3pm to 6pm Wednesday, March 23, 2022 in the Axe and Santella Family Chapel, 1534 Fourth St. Altoona, followed by a 6pm funeral service, Pastor Ed Jelliff officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park. Arrangements by Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home, 1520 Fourth St. Altoona.
